Mackie: There is a clear choice from the tee—lay up into the island of fairway created by a great loop of the Barry Burn, or go for broke. The shortest carry is 285 yards, the longest 314. Paul Lawrie laid up and hit a 221-yard 4-iron to 3 feet on his way to a playoff victory in 1999. The green slopes from high ground on the left towards three bunkers on the right.
Keith Mackie is an acclaimed international golf writer based in St. Andrews, Scotland. Carnoustie will mark the 44th consecutive Open Championship he has covered.
