Mackie: The safe left side of the fairway not only avoids the bunkers on the right but also gives a view of the green that lies 30 yards beyond a heavily bunkered ridge. It takes a perfectly struck second shot to hold a green that is wide but only 20 paces deep, dropping from a high right side down to a lower level on the left. Only 13 birdies were scored on this hole in 1999.
